Why do products need protection from UV light?

Common dyes used in beverages and personal care products can lose color when subjected to UV light. Many vitamins are sensitive to UV light as it can initiate oxidation reactions resulting in taste and odour changes.  UV light can also degrade product emulsifiers used to affect product texture.

Ultimate UV light blockers are designed to eliminate the negative impact UV light can have on products packaged in PET containers, and is used in an estimated 3 billion beverage, food, personal care and household product containers in North America each year.

UV barrier protection for food or beverages packaged in PET

Ultimate UV390 provides full broadband UV protection against light degradation allowing less than 10% UV light transmission up to 395nm - the edge of the visible spectrum.

As a liquid dispersion, Ultimate UV requires low dosing rates, can be dosed very accurately and with great consistency, making it one of the most cost-effective UV blocking solutions available.

Enabling container lightweighting and recyclabiliy

Ultimate UV high performance light blocking capability does not impact on the clarity of the PET container. This means that integrity of the contained product can be maintained even in lightweight containers. It also means that containers are fully recyclable.

Ultimate UV is the only UV barrier additive for PET that is currently recognised by Association of Plastics Recyclers and the European PET Bottle Platform for having no negative impact on the recycling stream.

Can be used in combination with Colors

Use of Ultimate UV390 in combination with ColorMatrix’s range of colors will offer enhanced light protection into the visible range, particularly important for vitamin enhanced products. Protection up to 575nm is possible, while maintaining transparency.

PP injection molded products and PVC/PC extruded applications that are exposed to the outside elements such as transit crates, refuse bins and window profiles also benefit from ColorMatrix’s UV absorbers to protect against light degradation.
